Drug name: Generic Pepcid (famotidine)

Therapeutic effects:

Pepcid is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist. Its active ingredient – famotidine - inhibits basal and stimulated by histamine, gastrin and acetylcholine production of Hcl. Along with decreased production of HCl and increased pH, the activity of pepsin decreases. Pepcid strengthens the defense mechanisms of the gastric mucosa by increasing the formation of gastric mucus and glycoprotein as well as stimulation of bicarbonate secretion and endogenous synthesis of Pg, promotes healing of its damages (including stress ulcer scarring) and termination of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Indications:

• Gastric and duodenal ulcer, prevention of recurrences
• Erosive gastroduodenitis
• Functional dyspepsia associated with increased secretion
• Symptomatic and stress gastrointestinal ulcers
• Reflux esophagitis
• Prevention of recurrence associated with long-term use of NSAIDs
• Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
• Systemic mastocytosis
• Multiple endocrine adenomatosis
• Prevention of bleeding recurrence after surgery
• Prevention of Mendelson's syndrome
